Thursday 24 March 2015 – Edinburgh Blues Club presents Martin Harley & Daniel Kimbro + Neil Warden/Gary Martin Trio + Gus Munro £12 7.15pm
Martin Harley is a supremely talented acoustic roots and blues guitarist, singer and songwriter with a burgeoning global reputation.
Live at Southern Ground, his eagerly anticipated new album, was recorded in Nashville in collaboration with Daniel Kimbro (Jerry Douglas, Larkin Poe) on upright bass.
As Martin explains “I wanted to make something representative of where I’m at musically at the moment with an album that reflects on the last year solo and duo touring. Daniel and I met in Knoxville through a mutual friend… he handed me his card which read… ‘alright guitar player… good upright bass player’ … an understatement on both parts!â€
A mixture of retrospective solo and duo arrangements recorded during an afternoon at the esteemed Southern Ground studio in Nashville, Live at Southern Ground features Martin on Weissenborn… a traditional Hawaiian acoustic guitar played across the lap, resonators and archtops, and of course Daniel Kimbro on upright bass.
“It’s a simple, honest and direct album with no overdubs in a warm sounding room with some great microphones and two new friends playing a few songs over a cold beer or two†says Martin. “There’s a great feeling when you click with someone. It frees you up to experiment with the arrangement and the dynamic of a song.â€
Live at Southern Ground follows on from Martin’s five previously acclaimed albums, most recently Mojo Fix in 2012. Along with many years of international touring and countless festivals Martin has built a strong international fan-base across the globe.
Renowned for his prowess as a slide guitarist, Martin is almost unique in the UK in his playing lap slide. During year-round worldwide touring he’s absorbed a plethora of diverse influences, honing his craft into the classic songwriting style he possesses today.
In the US, Martin has headlined Music City Roots in Nashville and toured coast to coast with ZZ Ward, Delta Rae and opened for Iron and Wine, Bruce Hornsby, Five for Fighting, World Party, Beth Hart, Joe Bonamassa amongst many others. Martin and Daniel will be visiting Edinburgh Blues Club as part of their duo tour in March 2016.

Support by Gus Munro
Gus Munro is one of the hidden gems of Scotland’s thriving music scene; the singer songwriter is starting to create waves in his hometown of Glasgow. His music has been described as Scottish-folk–blues, combining his love of Scottish traditional music and his passion for the blues. His song writing manages to retain the feel and emotional expression of the deep-rooted blues, while pushing through his Scottish roots in a modern context.
“My influences definitely come through in my music, the sound feels very natural to me. I grew up listening to pipe music, (John D Burgess and Donald MacLeod), then when I discovered the blues it was a whole new world, Elmore James in particular had a major effect on meâ€.
The emotional depth of his music and soft, melodic tone of his voice often display a real sense of vulnerability. He is an artist who is not afraid to show his emotions and convey them through his music. His singing and song writing are complimented by his imaginative and melodic slide guitar work, which adds to the emotional impact of his live performance. He is quickly gaining a reputation as a unique talent. A genuine, warm engaging performer, Gus will draw you into his world and compel you to listen.
Gus is fast becoming a regular on the circuit and steadily building a loyal fan base. He has performed at an array of festivals from Le Blues Du Zinc in France, to the Living the Blues festival in the historic Culloden battlefield visitors centre in Scotland. He has also performed at some of the UK’s biggest blues festivals including, Maryport, The Great British R & B Festival, and the Dundee Blues Bonanza. In the past year he has completed three European tours, playing a variety of shows across France, Belgium and Germany, receiving fantastic reactions from audiences, venues and promoters alike. Gus has also shared the stage with a variety of performers, Buddy Whittington, Billy Bass Nelson (Funkadelic), King King, Derrin Nauendorf, The Nimmo Brothers, and Bruce Foxton. With a return tour of Germany booked in November to coincide his album launch, he is really looking forward to promoting his music to a wider audience.
